Dipeptidyl peptidase 4 is a novel adipokine potentially linking obesity to the metabolic syndrome
In a recently accepted publication by the ADAPT consortium (Diabetes, in press), DPP4 is described as a novel adipokine which may impair insulin sensitivity in an auto- and paracrine fashion. DPP4 release was found to strongly correlate with adipocyte volume and parameters of the metabolic syndrome, and was decreased to the lean level after weight reduction. DPP4 may represent a novel biomarker and a potentially causal link between adipose tissue and the metabolic syndrome.
